Richards freshman Mia Palumbo makes history as 1st girl to win match at state wrestling meet

Mia Palumbo brought 10 years of wrestling experience to the IHSA state tournament at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
But even that couldn’t prepare the Richards freshman for the wave of emotion that swept over her Thursday when she became the first girl to win a match in the event’s 80-year history.
Palumbo rallied from a 2-0 deficit after two periods to beat Springfield’s Kaeden Kinison 4-2 in a Class 2A 106-pound opener.
“Once I won, it was a feeling I’ve never felt before,” Palumbo said. “Everybody was clapping.”
Added Richards coach Nick Grabarek: “The roar of the crowd was awesome.”
Palumbo is one of just four girls ever to qualify for state, including two this year.
Coming in, she said, “I was nervous. It was a really big (amount of) pressure.”
Grabarek knew that and tried to reassure Palumbo.
“She puts a lot of pressure on herself,” Grabarek said. “Like I told her, ‘You deserve this. This is what we expected out of you.’”
Up next for Palumbo in Friday’s quarterfinals is Marengo senior Landen Pfeiffer (39-3), who is ranked No. 1 by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. He took fifth at 106 in 2017.
If Palumbo beats Pfeiffer, she would advance to Friday night’s semifinals against either East St. Louis’ Anthony King or downstate Washington’s Abraham Hinrichsen.
“The first match is always the hardest match,” Grabarek said. “It’s a huge burden off her.”
A victory in the semifinals would assure Palumbo of a top-six finish and a place on the awards stand.
The other girl qualifier this year, Dunbar senior Quiovany Santos, was pinned in 2 minutes, 57 seconds by Cam Point Central’s Zach Forte at 106 pounds in 1A.
